Most treatment facilities use IV Infusion Pumps that can be programmed to infuse volume-controlled fluids and calculate the administration and flow rates. Further, most treatment facilities have evidence-based standards of care or protocols concerning this practice – always check your facility’s policy first. Typically a bolus would be administered in mL / hr, then the continuous infusion rate is calculated and expressed in mL / hr. Lastly, the intravenous flow rate (IVFR) is increased or deceased (titrated) to produce the ordered desired effect.

This app will help the health care provider manually complete these calculations to:

• Verify the solution and volume delivery to help avoid any adverse effects.

• Check and confirm the accuracy of the IV Infusion Pump.

• Deliver the solution as ordered when an Infusion Pump is not available.

A suggested best practice is to start the lowest ordered amount then increase or decrease as needed. Important: If you’ve administered the maximum amount without achieving the ordered desired effect, secure a new order from the prescribing health care provider before further adjusting the dose.
